Gli esperti della Chinese University di Hong Kong hanno però verificato scientificamente che gli antiossidanti presenti nella mela, i famosi polifenoli, sono davvero in grado di allungare la vita. Insomma, “Una mela al giorno, toglie il medico di torno” non è più solo un detto, ma una certezza.
Lo studio si è svolto sui moscerini della frutta e i ricercatori sono riusciti a scoprire che la vita di queste cavie può essere più lunga del 10% in più rispetto agli altri. Per giungere a questa tesi, hanno, infatti, scoperto che i polifenoli e altri antiossidanti sono stati in grado di invertire i livelli di sostanze biochimiche che si trovano generalmente nei moscerini molto vecchi.
Ma c’è molto di più ed è proprio, qui, almeno secondo la mia esperienza, che diventa ancora più interessante questa scoperta. Gli antiossidanti della mela hanno avuto anche altri effetti interessanti: hanno, per esempio, contribuito a preservare la loro capacità di camminare e arrampicarsi. Quindi migliora anche la qualità di vita.
Con questi risultati, pubblicati sull’ACS Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry e coordinato dal dottor Zhen-Yu Chen, si possono confermare studi elaborati nel passato, come quello pubblicato American Journal of Clinical Nutrition che aveva evidenziato una diminuzione di malattie cardiovascolari nelle donne che consumavano spesso le mele. Teniamo conto che gli antiossidanti sono attivi per contrastare i radicali liberi, tra i principali attori dell’invecchiamento. Ricordiamo però con ci sono solo le mele, ma quasi tutte le verdure e la frutta fanno bene alla salute e danno il giusto apporto di vitamina, sali minerale e antiossidanti. La regola dovrebbe essere quella di sfruttare, all’interno di una dieta sana, i prodotti di stagione, sia in estate sia in inverno.
