Antiossidanti, il carotene allunga la vita

Si crede sempre che per vivere a lungo ci voglia una cura miracolosa, in realtà mangiare bene potrebbe essere già un primo passo. Un elemento della nostra dieta fondamentale per la salute è il carotene, importante antiossidante. Lo dimostrato uno studio, firmato dal dottor Chaoyang Li del Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) di Atlanta e pubblicato sull’Archives of Internal Medicine (JAMA).

La riduzione delle malattie croniche e del cancro sembra essere collegato all’aumento di livelli di alfa-carotene nel sangue. Ma non solo: l’alfa-carotene, il beta-carotene e il licopene, insieme formano una mix potentissimo che contrasta l’ossidazione del corpo. Ma come possiamo integrarli nella nostra alimentazione? Queste sostanze si trovano naturalmente in molta frutta e verdura, sono il modo migliore per assumerle.

Lo studio, che si è occupato della relazione tra i livelli di alfa-carotene e il rischio di morte, ha coinvolto 15.318 adulti di vent’anni insieme agli anziani che hanno partecipato al Third National Health e Nutrition Survey. Tutti i partecipanti sono stati sottoposti a visita medica e all’esame del sangue tra il 1988 e il 1994. Nel 2006 sono stati ricontattati per capire se e come erano eventualmente deceduti.

Alla fine della ricerca i morti sono stati  3.810 partecipanti e il rischio più basso di morte ha toccato proprio coloro con i livelli più alti di questo antiossidante. Gli autori hanno quindi commentato:

L’associazione tra le concentrazioni sieriche di alfa-carotene e rischio di morte per tutte le cause è stata significativa nella maggior parte dei sottogruppi stratificati per caratteristiche demografiche, le abitudini di vita e fattori di rischio per la salute.

Le verdure che contengono i più alti livelli di alfa carotene sono quelle giallo-arancione (carote, patate dolci o zucca e zucca invernale) e verde scuro (broccoli, fagiolini, piselli, spinaci, rape, bietole e la foglia di lattuga).
