Secondo le stime oltre 14 milioni di italiani soffrono di sindrome metabolica, ossia un insieme di sintomi quali ipertensione, colesterolo alto e iperglicemia che, a lungo andare, possono provocare l’insorgenza di malattie cardiovascolari, cardiache e ictus.

Contro la sindrome metabolica e i suoi effetti, un aiuto può venire dalla frutta secca; secondo una recente ricerca condotta da un team di scienziati del Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre del St. Michael’s Hospital in Canada, mangiare la frutta secca, come noci, mandorle, anacardi, nocciole, ma anche noci di cocco e di macadamia, pinoli e pistacchi, è utile per combattere questa sindrome.

Secondo i risultati ottenuti dai medici, l’uso costante di questi cibi riduce gli zuccheri e i grassi nel sangue. Nonostante le noci siano ricche di calorie, nei pazienti che si sono sottoposti all’indagine, non ci sono stati aumenti, né di peso né di sintomi della sindrome metabolica. Inoltre, lo studio ha dimostrato che mangiare frutta secca migliora i risultati delle prove di test del glucosio a digiuno per i diabetici di tipo 2.

Il dottor John Sievenpiper, uno degli esperti che hanno condotto lo studio, ha commentato così i risultati della ricerca poi pubblicata sul “British Medical Journal:”

Le noci sono un altro modo che le persone possono usare per mantenere buoni i livelli di zucchero nel sangue nel quadro di un modello alimentare sano.

La frutta a guscio non è consigliata solo dal team di ricercatori canadesi: secondo la US Food and Drug Administration sostiene che essa aiuta a ridurre il rischio di malattie cardiovascolari; il consumo di noci è raccomandato anche dal Mediterranean, Portfolio and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), grazie alla loro proprietà di ridurre il colesterolo.
