La dieta Barf è l’ultima moda per i nostri amici a quattro zampe, cani e gratti. Barf deriva da Biologically Appropriate Raw Food e promuove il consumo da parte degli animali domestici di cibi crudi, perché in natura il sistema predatore-preda certo non prevedeva una calda cucina, un padrone e un fuocherello. L’alimentazione punta quindi su carne cruda, soprattutto ossa con polpa.
Ovviamente parliamo di animali domestici e a questo piatto principale, bisogna aggiungere frutta, verdura, noci, oli, erbe, con uova e latticini (ma in minore quantità). Non sono consigliati cereali e carboidrati. Inoltre sono vietati i prodotti artificiali come i preparati vitaminici e minerali. La verità però è che la Barf è diventata un business e sono tantissimi gli alimenti sul mercato confezionati appositamente per seguire questo regime.
Ci sono ovviamente pro e contro. Tra i pro, possiamo inserire evitare gli additivi e le sostanze chimiche, come mangiare fibre crude possa migliorare il transito intestinale e la cottura può distruggere molti nutrienti. Inoltre ne beneficia anche la salute dentale grazie al maggior tempo dedito alla masticazione: rosicchiare pezzi duri di carne ed ossa riduce la formazione di tartaro.
Esistono però anche dei contro: prima di tutto la dieta potrebbe non essere equilibrata e soprattutto troppo proteica, poi ci sono dei rischi igienici, la carne può contenere virus, batteri e parassiti se non trattata adeguatamente. L’assunzione di ossa può provocare lesioni orali, mentre alcuni cibi non sono adatti agli animali (cipolla, aglio, cioccolato), che non dobbiamo assolutamente umanizzare. Prima di seguirla, chiede al vostro veterinario.
