Il perfezionismo favorisce l’insorgere dei disturbi alimentari

La perfezione non esiste. Eppure alcune persone passano la loro vita a cercarla disperatamente. È una corsa contro il tempo, contro i propri limiti e può portare a delle vere e proprie manie, come i disturbi alimentari. Guardarsi allo specchio e non riconoscersi o fare di tutto per diventare qualcosa di impossibile: sono due meccanismi pericolosi che favoriscono l’insorgere di malattie.

I ricercatori australiani della Flinders University, di Adelaide, hanno condotto uno studio su circa mille donne, tra i 28 e i 40 anni, analizzando due comportamenti: la mania del perfezionismo che porta all’insoddisfazione del proprio corpo e quelli che comunemente vengono chiamati disturbi alimentari (bulimia, anoressia, vigoressia, ecc).

Le signore hanno partecipato a una serie di test, tra cui la misurazione dell’Indice di Massa Corporea. È emerso che tutte le volte che l’IMC era lontano da quello relativo al normopeso, le donne dimostravano di avere una visione distorta del loro aspetto. Non riuscire a vedersi chiaramente è davvero brutto, perché tra i tanti difetti (di cui ognuno di noi è ovviamente pieno), ci sono gli innumerevoli pregi, estetici e caratteriali.

Sapendo che il perfezionismo di qualsiasi tipo è un fattore di rischio per i disturbi alimentari, il suggerimento è affrontare le clienti con un atteggiamento del tipo “tutto o niente”, aiutandole a diventare meno coinvolte nel definire la loro autostima in termini di capacità di raggiungere standard elevati.

Ha commentato la dottoressa Tracey Wade, tra gli autori della ricerca. Dai dati è risultato evidente che le donne che desideravano un più basso BMI e una minore dimensione del corpo tendevano a essere più preoccupate di commettere errori, più preoccupate per l’organizzazione e nutrire più dubbi su di sé che tutte le altre.

 Il perfezionismo è anche frutto di una certa insicurezza e del bisogno di essere sempre approvati. Forse, in questo senso, sarebbe opportuno parlarne con un esperto.
