La cannella riduce il rischio di insorgenza di malattie cardiache e diabete. La scoperta è di un gruppo di ricercatori francesi e statunitensi, guidati dal dottor Richard Anderson del Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center dello United States Department of Agricolture. Lo studio, i cui risultati sono stati pubblicati sul Journal of American College of Nutrition, ha coinvolto un campione di 22 soggetti interessati dalla condizione clinica che tipicamente precede il diabete, caratterizzata da livelli elevati di glucosio nel sangue e definita pre-diabete.
Nel corso di undici settimane alla metà di essi è stata somministrata due volte al giorno, una dose di cannella pari a 250 mg mentre alla restante parte è stato dato un placebo. Le analisi del sangue successivamente effettuate avrebbero dimostrato, nel gruppo a cui era stata data la cannella, una riduzione del livello di glicemia addirittura del 23%. Il merito, secondo i ricercatori, sarebbe degli antiossidanti contenuti nella spezia; sarebbero questi ad agire positivamente abbassando il livello di zuccheri nel sangue.
