Si sono sottoposti alla sperimentazione 271 finlandesi volontari tra i 65 e i 79 anni, sani all’inizio della ricerca, 17 dei quali hanno sviluppato la demenza senile nel corso dello studio. I partecipanti sono stati periodicamente sottoposti ad analisi del sangue per analizzare i livelli di vitamina B12 e di omocisteina (un aminoacido associato alla vitamina B12) i cui eccessivi livelli sono collegati a effetti negativi sulla salute del cervello (compreso l’ictus). Il focus della ricerca ha verificato che per ogni micromole di omocisteina in più il rischio di malattia di Alzheimer aumenta del 16%, mentre per ogni picomole in più della forma attiva della vitamina B12 il rischio si riduce del 2%.
Il 2% può sembrare una piccola percentuale, ma è già un buon punto da cui partire per elaborare in futuro delle cure. Per esempio, è tipico degli anziani avere bassi livelli di vitamina B12. Tuttavia, i pochi studi che hanno investigato l’utilità dei supplementi di vitamina B12 per ridurre il rischio di perdita di memoria hanno dato risultati contrastanti.
