Carotenoidi: indispensabili per la salute delle donne

Con il termine carotenoidi si indicano una serie di pigmenti responsabili della colorazione di frutta e nella verdura; sono esempi di carotenodi il licopene, che si trova nei pomodori e nei meloni, la luteina, propria degli ortaggi a foglia verde, e il betacarotene, contenuto nei peperoni, nella zucca, nelle carote e nelle patate.

I carotenoidi contengono molte sostanze antiossidanti indispensabili per la salute delle donne, in quanto proteggono dall’insorgenza di diversi tumori, come ad esempio il cancro al seno, purtroppo però, molte non li assumono nelle giuste dosi; ciò è particolarmente vero soprattutto nel caso delle giovani donne, o almeno è ciò che emerge dal rapporto “Phytonutrient Report: Women’s Health by Color” realizzato dal Nutrilite Health Institute.

Lo studio ha preso in esame il consumo giornaliero di carotenoidi di un gruppo di donne di età superiore ai 45 anni, dal quale è emerso che solo un terzo di esse assumeva le dosi giornaliere di frutta e verdura previste dalle linee guida. In seguito, questi dati sono stati confrontati con quelli ottenuti dallo studio della dieta di un gruppo di donne più giovani, dai quali è risultato che solo una minima percentuale assumeva carotenoidi.

Dallo studio dei dati è emerso che le donne non consumano abbastanza carotenoidi, e che ciò è particolarmente radicato nelle giovani donne. Ecco come commentano il risultato gli esperti del Nutrilite Health Institute:

Un fenomeno preoccupante in cui le donne più giovani sono quelle in cui mancano di più i benefici del consumo di frutta e verdura.
