Testa nel frigorifero a qualsiasi ora della notte, voglia incontrollata di cibo e soprattutto una strana fame, che non è appetito ma solo voglia di mangiare in grandi quantità. Per fortuna non è un sentimento comune a tutti, ma le abbuffate compulsive sono frequenti e abbastanza diffuse. Rappresentano un vero e proprio disturbo dell’alimentazione, esattamente come la bulimia (che tra l’altro hanno diversi punti in comune).

Un nuovo studio ha scoperto l’esistenza di un interruttore, che può essere spento, nel cervello. Si tratta dell’ormone dell’ansia CRF. Non è tutto, perché la ricerca condotta da Valentina Sabino e Pietro Cottone della Boston university ha dimostrato l’esistenza di una molecola che agisce contro quest’ ormone bloccando le abbuffate. Questa molecola non è una novità ed era già stata sperimentata come terapia per la depressione, ma non è mai stata commercializzata.

Secondo noi dietro questo disturbo c’è appunto CRF, che aumenta nell’amigdala, il centro che genera l’ansia, durante l’astinenza da cibo incrementando l’ansia. Iniettando una molecola che blocca CRF, i ratti smettono di essere ansiosi e non sentono più il bisogno di mangiare.

Hanno spiegato i ricercatori, che per giungere a questa tesi hanno eseguito dei test sui topi, resi dipendenti al cibo. Il CRF si può bloccare sia la pulsione ad abbuffarsi sia l’ansia generata dall’astinenza da cibo.  Quante volte avete sentito lo stimolo di dover mangiare solo esclusivamente perché in voi c’era un senso d’inquietudine e questa inquietudine trova pace e serenità solo masticando. Ecco questo meccanismo nasconde ovviamente un problema psicologico.

Dopo la buona riuscita dei test, si è potuto anche dimostrare che iniettando il farmaco antagonista del CRF direttamente nell’amigdala si riesce a bloccare completamente sia le abbuffate sia l’ansia generata dall’astinenza dai cibi. È un ottimo risultato e potrebbe essere la base per la realizzazione di terapie mirate che possano presto entrare in commercio.
