La dieta per combattere la depressione e il suicidio

Ci sono dei cibi che non solo fanno bene alla salute, ma migliorano anche l’umore. Pesce azzurro, frutta secca, erbe come valeriana e passiflora, ma anche verdura e frutta fresca sono ricchi di nutrienti con virtù stabilizzanti dell’umore, ‘antidoto’ alla depressione.

Lo ha spiegato Maurizio Pompili, vice-presidente della International Association for Suicide Prevention (Iasp) e responsabile del Servizio per la Prevenzione del suicidio presso l’azienda ospedaliera Sant’Andrea-Sapienza Università di Roma all’Adnkronos Salute, evidenziano la funzione di una dieta appropriata anche nella gestione dei disturbi psichiatrici.

“Ogni anno nel mondo oltre 800 mila persone muoiono a causa del suicidio e questa è solo una stima parziale rispetto all’impatto che il fenomeno ha sulla società. Ma il suicidio si può prevenire. E i meccanismi attraverso i quali la nutrizione può impattare sulla salute mentale sono oggi sempre più studiati dalla psichiatria”.

Ma quali sono i nutrienti più promettenti come ‘alleati dell’umore’ e della salute del cervello? Sicuramente si possano citare gli omega-3, vitamine del gruppo B (in particolare acido folico e B12), colina, ferro, zinco, magnesio, S-adenosilmetionina, vitamina D e amminoacidi.

“Il cervello opera a un alto tasso metabolico e utilizza una grossa quota di energia e nutrienti. Le abitudini alimentari influiscono sul funzionamento del sistema immunitario, che incide sul rischio di depressione. Le difese antiossidanti coinvolte nelle patologie mentali utilizzano cofattori nutrienti”.

Via libera inoltre al pesce azzurro, ma anche ai molluschi che hanno virtù stabilizzanti per l’umore. Ottime le valeriana e la passiflora a concentrazioni importanti, senza dimenticare l’ormone melatonina, alleato del sonno regolare, e la frutta secca, ricca di magnesio e selenio, principi che contrastano i radicali liberi e sono utili per il benessere delle cellule nervose.
