L’estratto ricavato dai germogli di broccoli sembra proteggere la pelle dai raggi UV e al contempo sembra ridurre del 25% circa la probabilità di sviluppare i tumori della pelle. Già precedenti studi hanno indicato come i germogli di broccoli fossero attivi contro l’ipertensione o l’ulcera provocata dall’Helicobacter Pilory. Ma solo un recente studio condotto da un team di ricercatori della Johns Hopkins University, a Baltimora, negli Usa, e pubblicato sulla rivista scientifica Photochemistry & Photobiological Sciences, ha dimostrato che assumere l’estratto di germogli di broccoli per un periodo prolungato può proteggere la pelle dal cancro.
Per arrivare a tali conclusioni i ricercatori hanno esposto alcuni topi, precedentemente rasati, ai dannosi raggi UV, per ben 17 settimane. Successivamente hanno suddiviso i topi in due gruppi. Al primo gruppo hanno somministrato l’estratto di germogli di broccoli per 13 settimane, mentre al secondo gruppo non hanno somministrato un placebo per lo stesso lasso di tempo.
Al termine del test i risultati sono stati evidenti. I ricercatori hanno rilevato che l’estratto di germogli di broccoli ha protetto gli animali dall’insorgere del cancro alla cute. Inoltre, nei topi che già presentavano un tumore è stata rilevata una riduzione della massa tumorale del 70% circa, oltre ad una riduzione dell’incidenza del cancro. E’ necessario ricordare che i broccoli, così come le altre verdure appartenenti alla famiglia delle Crucifere, quali cavolfiori, cavoli e cavoletti di Bruxelles, sono già noti per i loro componenti antiossidanti e anticancerogeni.
Tra questi di grande importanza sono i glucosinolati, composti glucosidici tipici del mondo vegetale contenenti zolfo. L’organismo metabolizza queste sostanze e le trasforma in isotiocianati, sostanze molto note per le proprietà anticancro come, ad esempio, il sulforafano. Ovviamente saranno necessari ulteriori studi per confermare l’efficacia delle proprietà benefiche dell’estratto di germogli di broccoli anche sulla pelle dell’uomo. Se i risultati saranno positivi, sarà possibile aprire nuove strade per la prevenzione e la cura del cancro alla cute come, ad esempio, il temuto melanoma.
