Secondo una ricerca della Johns Hopkins, il silenziamento di una proteina renderebbe il grasso in eccesso più facile da smaltire. Ecco, perché, come spiega il prof. Sheng Bi, se si riuscisse ad indurre il corpo a trasformare il grasso cattivo in grasso buono, che brucia calorie invece di immagazzinarle, si potrebbe aggiungere un nuovo strumento per contrastare la cosiddetta “malattia del benessere”.
Il tessuto adiposo si distingue in base al colore bianco o bruno. Quello di colore bianco, tende ad accumularsi nella zona dell’addome, dei glutei e delle cosce, raccogliendo le calorie in eccesso che si consumano. Mentre il tessuto adiposo bruno viene utilizzato dall’organismo per produrre energia e per questa caratteristica ha meritato l’appellativo di grasso “buono”.
Con il trascorrere del tempo, il rapporto fra grasso bianco e grasso bruno si modifica, a favore del tessuto adiposo bianco. La ricerca del professor Bi, dunque, potrebbe essere un modo per combattere l’eccesso di peso agendo attraverso la soppressione del neuropeptide Y (NYP) nell’ipotalamo dorsomediale.
Questo particolare proteina, infatti, è coinvolta nei processi legati ad importanti funzioni fisiologiche come la fame, la sete. Ecco perché, secondo gli esperti, disattivando la proteina, si potrebbe favorire la ricomparsa del grasso buono a discapito di quello bianco. Una delle possibili frontiere derivanti dalla ricerca, potrebbe essere l’iniezione di cellule staminali di grasso bruno nel tessuto adiposo bianco, per regolare il peso nelle persone obese, ma al momento si tratta solo di un’ipotesi.
Il corpo aumenta la quantità di grasso bruno soprattutto a seconda della temperatura, quindi può essere d’aiuto ridurre leggermente la temperatura in casa d’inverno. Il grasso bruno è comunque uno strumento in più per dimagrire, non bisogna credere che questo sistema da solo possa ridurre il problema dell’obesità.
