Nella ricerca in questione, condotta da alcuni medici dell’Università dell’Arizona di Tucson negli Stati Uniti e pubblicata on line su “Metabolism”, gli studiosi hanno analizzato una possibile influenza tra il pompelmo, i grassi che circolano nel sangue e la pressione arteriosa, compiendo un’indagine su 74 pazienti adulti in sovrappeso oppure obesi.
I volontari sono stati sottoposti a una dieta di preparazione della durata di tre settimane durante le quali hanno dovuto ridurre il consumo di frutta e verdura più ricchi di composti bioattivi, in modo da osservare meglio eventuali effetti positivi una volta iniziato a consumare regolarmente il pompelmo; i pazienti sono stati poi divisi in due gruppi: uno ha continuato a seguire la stessa dieta, mentre l’altro ha aggiunto mezzo pompelmo rosa tre volte al giorno, da consumare quindici minuti prima dei pasti.
Dopo sei settimane, i ricercatori hanno verificato i risultati in termini di perdita di peso: il gruppo che aveva mangiato pompelmo manifestava una modesta riduzione di peso, mentre apparivano significative le diminuzioni della circonferenza vita, di pressione massima e dei livelli di colesterolo cattivo, rispetto ai dati registrati nel gruppo di controllo.
Risultati interessanti, sui quali però è meglio rimanere cauti, come spiega il dottor Domenico Sommariva, vicepresidente della sezione lombarda della Società italiana che invita alla prudenza e commenta così gli esiti dello studio dei colleghi americani:
