La caffeina è lo stimolante più diffuso al mondo, sia sotto forma di caffè che di energy drink. Come per tutte le cose vale l’indicazione di farne un uso moderato e di non esagerare, ma pare che molto spesso non sia così: dagli Usa arriva l’uso di caffeina pura ed è allarme per la diffusione di questa pratica.
Su internet è sempre più diffuso l’acquisto di confezioni di caffeina in polvere purissima, molto pericolosa per il rischio di overdose, tanto che negli Stati Uniti un adolescente è morto proprio per questo motivo. In Italia non sono stati ancora segnalati casi così gravi, ma non è raro l’uso di caffeina in polvere soprattutto tra gli sportivi come stimolante energetico.
Ma perché c’è questo allarme? Vi basti pensare che un cucchiaino di caffeina pure equivale a circa 25 tazzine di caffè e può causare overdose accidentale anche in piccole dosi, dato che non è possibile misurarla bene.
I giovani sono le persone più a rischio, perché vedono nella caffeina pura in polvere un potente stimolante, energetico e anche dimagrante. Da qui l’indicazione ai genitori da parte della Food and Drug Administration a stare molto attenti ad eventuali nuovi stati dei figli.
I sintomi della tossicità della caffeina in polvere sono vomito, diarrea, torpore e disorientamento, insomma: stati molto più gravi di quando si beve troppo caffè o energy drink. I sintomi da overdose, invece, sono tachicardia, attacchi epilettici e, nei casi più gravi, anche la morte.
Il direttore dell’Osservatorio alcol, droga e fumo dell’Istituto superiore di sanità, Roberta Pacifici, spiega che in Italia:
Non si hanno notizie di caffeina pura, né di morti ma sappiamo e su questo abbiamo dato l’allerta che molti giovani consumano gli energy drink che contengono importanti concentrazioni di caffeina.
