Dalla pianta d’olivo davvero prendiamo ogni cosa: i frutti, le olive, da cui estraiamo l’olio extravergine, l’elemento principe della dieta mediterranea, e anche le foglie. Può sembrare strano, conoscendo tutte le proprietà benefiche dell’olio, ma sono proprio le foglie a contenere la maggior quantità di principi attivi, che sfruttiamo attraverso gli estratti.
La sostanza di cui le foglie sono particolarmente ricche è l’oleuropeina, contenuto anche nell’olio. È un polifenolo, con una componente glicosidica. Questo prezioso antiossidante è quello che regala quel gusto un po’ amaro sia nelle olive sia nelle foglie. Nella fase di maturazione del frutto, per idrolisi, genera alcune molecole molte importanti, come l’Acido Elenolico (Elenolic Acid), l’Idrossitirosolo ( Hydroxytyrosol) e la Rutina. Ma c’è di più. L’oleuropeina è definita anche sostanza “nutraceutica” perché è stata verificata la sua capacità antitumorale.
Tra le caratteristiche principali degli estratti delle foglie d’olivo, ci sono altre due importanti azioni: riduce il colesterolo LDL e la pressione arteriosa. Per giungere a questa conclusione, uno studio composto da ricercatori svizzeri e tedeschi hanno monitorato per otto settimane alcune coppie di gemelli (un fratello assumeva gli estratti, l’altro un placebo). È emerso che coloro che hanno assunto l’olivo aveva abbassato i parametri della pressione arteriosa, ma anche quelli del colesterolo cattivo. Ovviamente, l’effetto è maggiore, maggiore la quantità di estratto assunta.
Gli estratti, inoltre, aiutano anche a contrastare l`insorgenza della sindrome metabolica e dell`obesità grazie all`acido oleico e ai polifenoli, contenuti sempre nelle foglie. Stando agli studi a oggi formulati, queste sostanze sono in grado anche di ridurre i cambiamenti che una dieta ricca di grassi e carboidrati può provocare al sistema circolatorio e al metabolismo stesso. Ma dove si possono acquistare gli estratti? Li trovate in vendita nelle erboristerie e poi in alcuni integratori in farmacia.
