Secondo un gruppo di ricercatori del Flinders Centre for Cancer Prevention and Control di Adelaide (Australia) assumere quantitativi adeguati di selenio attraverso la dieta aiuta a prevenire il cancro al colon. Questo prezioso minerale infatti sarebbe in grado di stimolare la cosiddetta apoptosi, un processo che conduce le cellule malate del nostro organismo ad autodistruggersi e che risulta ostacolato dalla presenza di un tumore.
Lo studio, coordinato dal dottor Graeme Young, si è basato sull’analisi di due precedenti sperimentazioni: una condotta su un gruppo di cavie da laboratorio, l’altra su un campione di 23 volontari ultracinquantenni che osservarono un programma alimentare ricco di selenio. In entrambi i casi è stata osservata la presenza nell’intestino di elevati livelli di una sostanza antiossidante, il GPx-2, in grado, secondo gli esperti, di proteggere dall’insorgenza del tumore.
Le conclusioni dello studio del Flinders Centre, presentato qualche giorno fa all’Australian Gastroenterology Week di Sidney, hanno portato alla elaborazione di precise linee guida che indicano un apporto giornaliero di 50 grammi di selenio come quantità utile alla prevenzione del tumore del colon, almeno per il momento.
Come precisa lo stesso Young infatti nel corso degli studi citati le dosi di selenio assunte dai volontari erano ben più alte (150 grammi), ma in assenza di ulteriori conferme e senza la guida di un esperto è sconsigliabile attenersi a tale quantitativo. Il selenio infatti assunto in quantitativi troppo elevati ha effetti tossici sull’organismo. Bene quindi mangiare più spesso cereali, noci, uova e pesce, tutti alimenti ricchi di selenio, ma meglio evitare sperimentazioni fai da te.
D’altra parte, se il dottor Young e collaboratori si dicono convinti che il selenio riduca il rischio di insorgenza di cancro all’intestino, un altro studio, statunitense stavolta, avrebbe smentito l’utilità di integratori a base di selenio e vitamina E nella prevenzione del cancro alla prostata.
