Secondo il dottor Barry Sears la dieta Zona, oltre a permettere di vivere più in forma e più a lungo e proteggere dall’insorgenza di patologie quali diabete, cardiopatie, osteoporosi e cancro, è in grado, insieme all’adozione di precise abitudini di vita, di arrestare e invertire il processo di invecchiamento.
Per illustrare questo suo punto di vista Sears ha elaborato la piramide dello stile di vita anti-invecchiamento pro Zona che propone tre strategie mirate a neutralizzare i quattro fattori che accelerano i processi di invecchiamento:
- Eccesso di insulina;
- Eccesso di radicali liberi;
- Eccesso di cortisolo;
- Eccesso di zucchero nel sangue (iperglicemia).
Come sempre le strategie proposte hanno l’effetto di indurre opportune modificazioni ormonali e consistono, in ordine di efficacia, nella restrizione calorica secondo la dieta Zona, nel praticare attività fisica moderata e nella riduzione dello stress attraverso la meditazione.
La restrizione calorica, ritenuta l’elemento fondamentale, è situata alla base della piramide; si tratta infatti dell’unica strategia anti-invecchiamento la cui efficacia sia stata scientificamente dimostrata.
Segue l’esercizio fisico moderato ma costante; se da un lato infatti è certo che l’inattività conduce ben presto al decadimento fisico dall’altro è anche vero che l’esercizio sfrenato promuove la produzione di radicali liberi e l’eccesso di cortisolo. Bastano 30 minuti di attività aerobica al giorno per mantenere sotto controllo i livelli di insulina.
Infine, al vertice della piramide, troviamo la pratica meditativa utile a ridurre i dannosi effetti dello stress quali l’ecceso di ormoni come il cortisolo.
Cambiare in modo radicale e definitvo il proprio stile di vita attuando queste tre, semplici, strategie permette, afferma Sears, di sentirsi e apparire più giovani di almeno venti anni.
Elemento fondante di questo programma anti-invecchiamento rimane comunque la dieta Zona, poichè permette di combattere contemporaneanmente i fattori che accelerano il processo di invecchiamento: riduce l’apporto calorico e quindi contrasta la formazione di radicali liberi, limita il consumo di carboidrati e, di conseguenza, l’eccessiva secrezione di insulina, fornisce adeguate quantità di proteine magre innescando meccanismi di controllo del cortisolo.
